Slow running computer? Slow response times?
Slow running computer problems, slow startup problems and slow response times is very irritating but if the issue is left for too long then it can progressively worsen leading to more adverse problems.
Computer is Slow? - Then try out these options below:
- Scan for Spyware and Viruses - This is an absolute must. Spyware and viruses will significantly reduce the speed and slow response times of your computer. This is just the tip of the iceberg as viruses can seriously harm the integrity of your computer, so install a reputable antivirus and spyware program immediately. Visit our Antivirus Software page and our Spyware Removal page for further information.
- Run your Disk cleanup wizard - The disk cleanup will calculate how much space on your drive can be freed, either by deletion or compression - you can choose. Lack of free space is equal to a slow PC. Open ' My Computer ' and right click on your ' Local Disk', click on ' Properties ' and then select the ' General ' tab and click on ' Disk Cleanup '. This basic tool will eliminate any simple issues that make your computer slow.
- Free your computer of unused applications - ' Start ' and then select the ' Control Panel '. Click on ' Add or Remove Programs '. A list of all the programs installed on your computer is shown. Click ' uninstall ' for the ones that you do not use. The more programs that you have installed uses more space on your system and therefore makes your computer slow and sluggish. So uninstall the programs that you do not use - simple.
DO NOT remove any program that you are not sure of. It may be needed and used by the operating system.
- Windows Update - Check that you have installed the latest ' Windows Update ' from Microsoft. ' Start ', 'Control Panel ' and select ' Windows Update '.
- Services and applications - If you are a competent user than you can reduce the number of services and applications that start up when Windows initiates. Applications, more so than services will give you a slow startup. ' Start ' and then click on ' Run ' and type in MSCONFIG and select the ' Startup ' tab (applications only). Disable what you will. These applications are still available once you are logged in - they have not been deleted.
- Services - follow the same procedure but select the ' services ' tab instead.
DO NOT uncheck the 'Hide All Microsoft Services' box . You may render your computer useless if you disable any Microsoft Services. Also DO NOT disable any virus services unless you have 3rd party antivirus software.
- Defragment your hard drive - Over time files get dispersed on your hard drive. This is due to files being deleted, new ones created or copied, ect and because of this the search and retrieval time becomes longer, hence a slow running computer. Open ' My Computer ' and right click on your ' Local Disk ', click on ' Properties ' and then select the ' Tools ' tab . Select ' Defragment Now ' and then ' Analyze ' to start. It will assess then advise whether it will need to be defragmented. Go with what it advises.
